Built to Endure

Over the years , when we want to glorify a civilization ; our minds start to think about its technological achievements, military conquests, soaring monuments and economic growth. Our minds are fixated with this  idea of success.

But this reality also cannot be denied that the endurance of a civilization, its existence and vitality entirely depends on its moral and ethical foundation. It’s the values and principles that define and set the tone of how people treat one another , overcome differences and resolve problems, structure their lives and relationships, strive for mutual goals and over all prosperity of their nation.

However , I feel that in today’s time , growing sense of individualism , fragments in society , fast pace quick fixes possible due to technology and spread of misinformation has widely effected our ethical foundations. What we see around us is a divided community affected by uncertainty and confusion. There is only one way to fight this complicated situation and that is to return to our fundamental principles and values.

Few days ago I posted an article about how we are failing as a society. Today I want to talk about the seven important pillars that form a solid foundation of a society. Justice, peace, love, honor, truth, righteousness, and wisdom.

Having discussed these , we will move to the second part of my post today where I would like to elaborate the underlying virtues of loyalty, courage, that outline code of conduct This is because unless we incorporate these timeless principles in our strategy, it will be impossible to socially reform ourselves, create moral leadership and work for community prosperity in the given times.

First part :

The seven pillars of a society

1. Justice

It is what defines fairness and legitimacy in our society.

It ensures that everyone is treated equally, rights are protected, wrongdoers are prosecuted and everyone enjoys equal protection under the law.

Now the question is , why it’s so important to have a fair judicial system ? It’s because in a lawless state, tyranny is the order where law serves those in power rather than common public, courts and police are like puppets which play by the hands of the powerful. People are insecure and uncertain. It becomes the root cause of social imbalance .

Now how can we ensure a “just” environment in our society. We need to educate our community about the importance of fairness in society, how they need to uphold their dignity against discrimination and corruption. Everyone should be treated equally before the law and no special treatment should be given to anyone . Regular cycles of accountability should be in place for those in power so that we can rule out if there is any misuse of power.

2. Peace:

It’s the basic pillar of social stability  and cooperation.

It doesn’t merely mean that there is no active way, infact it relays the sentiments of respect, social cohesion and defines the conditions under which people can flourish and grow. Unless there is no peace in society, economy cannot grow, culture and values will not flourish.

It’s important to understand why peace matters. If there is no peace, you will see disintegration in your community, business will get affected including foreign trade, innovation and research options would get limited because no one wants to get involved with a volatile nation.

Peace facilitates innovation, local and foreign investments. Without it, communities disintegrate and economies collapse. Social unrest becomes a major hurdle in the way of progress .

How can we ensure peace in our community? My recommendation is to make a work force of community mediators who can diffuse a rising conflict before it leads to violence. Currently many countries have local govt representatives who represent a certain area but their role gets compromised because instead of being on the ground, they prefer to relax in comfortable offices.  So we need authentic public representation. Secondly we need to pass anti discrimination laws so that minorities feel included. Thirdly, regular and close monitoring of the social environment specially social media. It should be noted that in my view , I feel under the umbrella of freedoms of speech , many non state actors make use of social media forums and instigate/provoke people to create social unrest which supports a cause close to their hearts ; irrespective to either it aligns with the objectives of the state or not .

3. Love:

It is the social glue which binds us all. Feeling of compassion, care and empathy; love is what brings us all together and ensures our emotional well being while maintaining resilience. It is the core of every long lasting relationship. It’s imperative, we as a society feel compassion for one another. Only then we can overcome mental health problems which in today’s time are effecting both children and adults. A loveless society is cold and dysfunctional.

How can we promote love? Educate and create awareness sessions that teach conflict management and promote how to develop healthy relationships. Special attention should be given to family support programs that address social and financial issues faced by families.

4. Honor

It is the foundation of respect and responsibility in a society. When we talk about honor, it doesn’t just mean self respect, but also refers to the respect of others. It’s a two way relationship. That is what makes a person honorable , it demands responsibility, accountability and ethical values. It ensures that people feel free at hearts and their feelings are not suppressed.

Why is it important to have honor in society?  So that there is no corruption in society and people flourish and grow without any fear in their hearts. It lays down the foundation of ethical leadership.

It’s not difficult to implement it. All we need to do is to keep the consciousness of people alive. Honor instills social standards that fight exploitation of individuals and ensures ethical conduct.

5. Truth:

Truth is the key for making smart decisions which lead to establishing trust, it is much more than just honesty.

Truth is sacred and most vulnerable to attacks of corruption and evil minds as everyone will always have their own version of truth. But it can only be protected when public has trust in the institutions of the country. That’s the only way to survive manipulations.

In today’s era of social media, it’s very difficult to distinguish between what to believe and not. But there is a way we can ensure government media should be fair instead of doing biased reporting. It should hold leaders accountable even without fear and do ethical reporting. People should be educated about how to analyze information.

6. Righteousness:

It’s the sense of integrity, which ensures application of moral and ethical stands in everyday life. It demonstrates the inner commitment of a society to good for example people are respectful and compassionate in their dealing with one another, fair in their decisions and judgement.

Why it’s important to have this “ inner goodness”?  Because you cannot sustain a change if it doesn’t come from within.

How can we work on it ? By supporting community

service programs and volunteering. Focus on integrating values of integrity and compassion in people and arrange character building workshops.

7. Wisdom:

Wisdom is what defines the foundation of visionary leadership  for a sustainable future. It is what makes us capable to apply our knowledge to the best of our abilities, align strategy with empathy to create a future of a successful society.

Why is it important to have a wise leadership? Because only then it’s possible that they don’t make short sighted decisions and serve public interest both socially and economically.

Wisdom is a natural capacity however we can polish this quality in individuals by conducting regular leadership development programs, governments must demonstrate far sightedness in their decisions so that future generations benefit from them.

Now let’s come to the second part of my post which I want to discuss the core virtues that provide support to the seven pillars of a successful society.

Loyalty

It’s unfair that when we talk about loyalty, we always confuse it with blinded obedience. Whereas loyalty is the invisible thread that binds us all together , it is a careful commitment to a purpose , principles and in some cases people. It saves a society from exploitation and instills the feelings of belonging and empathy among the masses. Loyalty is an act of honor, and will to continue even if circumstances take an inconvenient turn.

In today’s era, it seems like we are experiencing a crisis of loyalty. We are more divided and self centered than ever before. This is failing us as a society, relationships are on survival kit everything has become disposable. Why has this happened ? It’s because we have confused loyalty with our self absorbed expectations. We take it as a one way road, whereas it cannot flourish in a society or a relationship if it is suffocated under the pressure of unrealistic expectations and selfish agendas.

Courage:

Courage is a conscious choice to do the right thing regardless of any fear. It is a gift and should not be visualized as an element of threat. I often feel that we become insecure when we come face to face with courage, infact it is what fuels advances in societies through empowering justice, truth, and change.

In today’s era, the tyranny has different faces. It’s like standing up against unseen evil, challenging unpopular opinions and most of all admitting one’s own fallibility.

A Code of Conduct: The Moral Architecture of Civilization

We are living the times of moral confusion, lack of discipline and no direction. We do celebrate technological progress and feel that we as civilization are at the top of our game but we forget that what’ we achieve today will be replaced by a newer version of the product next year and so on. What remains alive through generations are grand moments of courage, bravery, ethical and moral standing.

It’s high time we prioritize educating our masses and work to develop community programs that develop social infrastructure reforms which focus on Justice, ethical governance and trust. Government should implement anti discrimination legislation and promote family support services.

Civilizations fall not from outside but when their moral foundation is lost. The pillars of justice, peace, love, honor, truth, righteousness, and wisdom—nurtured by loyalty, courage, and stringent code of conduct—are the pillars of lasting society. In these uncertain times, holding onto these virtues is essential for survival. When we will build our society based on these core values , only then it will be possible to create a nation that will last through generations and will pass the test of time.
